DB Meiningen delivered Tornado’s original boiler in July 2006. This strategic move by the Trust will reduce the time out of traffic for each locomotive by around four months, increase the potential revenue earned by both locomotive during each operational cycle and reduce the cost of their overhauls.
The boiler involved in the accident was a 2000 built Cleaver-Brooks CB Packaged high-pressure steam, gas/oil fired, 400 horsepower, and 150 pounds per square inch (psi) firetube boiler. The boiler bears the ASME “S” stamp and National Board registration number 10409.
Construction of Tornado began in 1994 and was at Darlington Works for most of the project, whilst numerous components such as the boiler were manufactured elsewhere. The project was financed through fundraising initiatives such as public donations and sponsorship deals and further funding came from hiring out Tornado itself for special rail services.

Following a successful hydraulic testing in Meiningen, witnessed by all the required approval bodies, Tornado’s boiler was given the confirmatory CE marking. After some very careful – and somewhat euphoric – inspection, the whole unit was parked overnight on the field behind the Locomotive Works.
